Byron Bay Gliding Club

promotes recreational gliding and makes it accessible to aviation enthusiasts in a supportive club atmosphere.

Under the framework of Gliding Australia rules, the club introduces newcomers to the sport and anyone interested in soaring flight by conducting introductory Air Experience Flights.

Structured training courses that strictly align with the Gliding Australia standard are designed to progress new pilots all the way to the independent operator stage.Pilots with existing gliding experience and privileges can convert to self-launching touring motor gliders.

Operating from Tyagarah Airfield just North of Byron Bay, the club relies on self-launching gliders, which uniquely combine the operational advantages of powered aircraft with the soaring capabilities of engine-less sailplanes.

This specialised fleet allows the club to conduct soaring flights locally and extend flights to regional destinations well beyond the glide range of a traditional pure sailplane.

The local area covers spectacular coastal and hinterland geography—including the Byron Bay Lighthouse, Cape Byron Nature Reserve, the Coorabell Ridge, and the volcanic caldera of Mount Warning.

Long-distance touring motor gliding is highlighted by members’ expeditions to the Gulf of Carpentaria to soar the famous Morning Glory cloud formations.
